The Javier Mascherano tax fraud story has finally reached its conclusion.
As expected, the Barcelona star will be forced to pay a huge fine after pleading guilty to tax indiscretions earlier this year.
The Argentina international will have to fork out €816,000 (£588,000), which is a serious wedge, even for a footballer earning £130,000 a week.
Sensationally, Mascherano was also sentenced to a year in prison by the Spanish courts.
However, as is often the case with high-profile ‘celebrity’ cases, Mascherano won’t actually serve any time behind bars.
Why? Because he’s famous, that’s why.
The official word is that Mascherano and his legal team ‘reached an agreement’ with prosecutors.
We assume that means they threw wads of cash at the problem until it went away.
