President Buhari ended his participation at the Lesser hajj today February 27th and is now in Qatar where he and his delegation will be attending the meeting of Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC). He is expected back to Nigeria on Monday February 29th.
In the early hours of Monday, February 22, a mother, her four children and two female house guests aged 14 and 18, who were about to be married, were brutally slaughtered by yet-to-be identified people in Kebbi State. The killers spared a 6-month-old baby. Daily Trust visited the family home, where the family’s patriarch and neighbours spoke about the tragedy. Read below:
"It was a black Sunday for the residents of Bayan Kara Ta Gabas in Birnin Kebbi, the capital city of Kebbi State, when unknown assailants slaughtered a housewife, three of her children and two brides-to-be, at midnight. The housewife, Amina and her nine-year-old son Jibril, three-year-old twins Hassan and Hussaina, were said to have been hacked to death with machetes. Two female houseguests were also killed, having stayed over as they usually did to keep their neighbour company whenever late Amina’s husband, Alhaji Dan Dare (Mai-Bulawus), travels on business.
Mai-Bulawus, a small-scale businessman, sells ladies’ clothes at the Kebbi Central Market, earning him the name Mai-Bulawus, roughly meaning ‘one who sells blouses’. He buys his wares from Onitsha, and was there when the violent attack occurred.
In the morning, Daily Trust learnt, neighbours decided to break into the house when they didn’t notice the usual movement of the children who were supposed to have come out to prepare for school. It was after getting into the house that they found their lifeless bodies, with gashes and cuts all over. The three-month-old baby who was spared by the killers was crying on the bed. It is believed that the oldest child of the family, who was away at his grandmothers’, would also have been killed.
When Daily Trust visited the home of Mai-Bulawus, sympathisers were still trooping to condole with the visibly-shaken man. At the the house, there was heavy presence of police, with a patrol van stationed nearby.
Mai-Bulawus, distraught, strained to recount his last contact with his wife and children. “Whenever I am travelling, I make sure that I provide them with all they need so they wouldn’t lack anything and that’s what I did,” he narrated, recalling that late Amina and the twins had followed him to the gate to bid him farewell, “Not knowing that they were saying their final goodbyes.”
Mai-Bulawus said he received his wife’s call first in Sokoto, when he was boarding a luxury bus to Onitsha, and the last one was in Abuja. “On getting to Onitsha in the morning, I called one electrician whom I had contracted to carry out some repairs at home to inquire if he had done it, but he told me he wasn’t able yet. But he asked me to call Dangara, a relative of mine. “When I called Dangara, he rejected the call and later switched off his phone. I then decided to call another member of my family, Zaki, who told me something was wrong with my family, but pleaded with me to switch off my phones because people would be disturbing me with calls. Reluctantly, I obliged.”
Mai-Bulawus would later on learn all his relatives and friends were warned against breaking the news to him until he returned from his trip. As soon as he came back from Onitsha on Tuesday, February 23, his brother broke the gut-wrenching news to him, telling him how his wife, three children and two of his neighbour’s daughters were murdered in cold blood.“I can’t even describe how I felt, but as a Muslim I succumbed to the will of God. I am now left with a 3-month-old baby and my eldest son. All I can do is pray to Allah to grant them eternal peace,” he told Daily Trust.
Mai-Bulawus described late Amina as obedient, God-fearing and very supportive.
Though he doesn’t suspect anyone, as he claimed not to have any enemy because he lives in peace with all his neighbours and business partners, Mai-Bulawus said: “One cannot tell for sure.” He also commended the police for their work on the investigation, expressing optimism that the killers will be brought to book, and soon.
The neighbour, Alhaji Rabi’u Maitunka, whose two daughters, Aishat (18) and Nafisa (14), were also murdered, told Daily Trust that arrangements for the duo’s marriage had commenced, as they both had suitors. He said he was also on a business trip when the incident happened, and he could not be reached because there was no telephone service in the area, a village in Niger State.
Maitunka said it was after he came back to Kaboji village that his brother called to ask when he was coming back. “I told him I was already on my way and he quickly hung up. A few minutes later, I received another call from my junior wife who asked me the same question before terminating the call. I became suspicious because I could tell from her voice that all was not well. So, I called her back and from the background I heard a voice say ‘just tell him’ and she broke the saddest news ever to me,” he said.
Maitunka said his daughters’ good manners were what endeared them to Alhaji’s late wife and as such they made his house their second home. He said Aishat was about completing her secondary school and both of them had suitors. They had wanted their marriage to take place before the fasting period. He described them as nice and well-behaved, praying to Allah to grant them eternal rest.
Mustapha Abdullahi, the teacher of the Islamic school that 3-year-old Hassan and Hussaina attended before their murder, recalled his last encounter with his pupils, while bringing them home as he always did after school hours. “Hassan asked me to buy him a motorcycle while Hussaina requested for a teddy bear and I jokingly told them ‘no problem’ before I bade them goodnight, not knowing that would be our last meeting.” He said the deaths shocked him, adding that they were such brilliant and adorable children.
The people of the area were said to have taken security issues with laxity, according to the Village Head of Bayan Kara Ta Gabas, Malam Abubakar Wurogaure. He said he had severally told his people about the need to be security-conscious and employ night watchmen, but his advice had been ignored. “I believe the issue of security is no longer the business of security agencies alone but a collective concern and that was the reason why I always warned my people about the need to come together and find ways of enhancing the security of the area but nobody was willing to support the idea,” he said.
Wurogaure said the community is witnessing this kind of incident for the first time. “I was teaching my students when somebody came and informed me that a housewife had been killed in their area. So, I discharged my students and rushed to the scene. On getting there, we discovered it was not only the housewife that was killed, but a number of others. I asked everybody to stay away from the crime scene until the arrival of the police. I informed my district head about the development, who met me there with some policemen.”
Wurogaure also hoped fervently that such a violent, tragic incident never occurs again. The Divisional Police Officer in charge of the area, he said, had summoned and sensitized them on the need to take issues of security very seriously. “He pledged to give us all the necessary support towards ensuring the safety of the area."
Governor Atiku Bagudu and the Kebbi State Commissioner of Police Yakubu Jibril were among the people who attended the funeral prayers for the deceased.
Bagudu, while condoling with the families of the victims, described the killing as barbaric and a serious offence whose perpetrators must be punished. He was confident that the police would track down the killers, and prayed Allah to grant them the fortitude to bear the loss.
On his part, the Commissioner of Police said the killing was an act of assassination, assuring that his men would identify the killers and bring them to justice.
Spokesman of the Command, ASP Nafi’u Abubakar, said investigation has commenced on the latter, but no arrest has been made yet.

27-year-old Elena Smocot who was married was with her two children and her seven-year-old nephew in Barlad, Romania, when she noticed the striking resemblance between her new born baby boy and her lover.
When she realized that her husband wasn’t the father of her newborn baby, she picked the infant up by his legs and swung him several times, repeatedly hitting his head against a furniture until the baby stopped crying.
She then took her son outside, put him on the ground, and began to stomp on him repeatedly.
Her four-year-old son and nephew heard the noises and ran outside, where they saw what Smocot was doing and ran to a neighbors’ house to tell them what she was doing.
However, by the time they returned with neighbors and police, Smocot had used a broken roof tile and cut the infant in half with it. After she cut the infant up, she pulled out his intestines, put his body parts in the bathtub, and took a shower with them.
Smocot was promptly arrested and charged with killing her baby in front of her four-year-old son and her nephew, aged seven.
She told police that removing the child’s intestines had been difficult, and that it was easier removing a chicken’s intenstines than her son's. She unemotionally told the Police that she had to pull twice to get her son's intestines out and had to repeatedly chop at the corpse.
She told police that her horrific actions were triggered by observing how her newborn son bore a striking resemblance to the man she’d been having an affair with.
In court, evidence was presented that Smocot may been experiencing severe depression, adding that in both 2010 and 2012 she had suffered from postnatal depression but the court rejected that plea stating that she knew what she was doing when she tortured and killed the innocent child.
.The court ruled that despite the possibility of postnatal depression, she was aware of her actions, thus guilty of murder.
Smocot has been sentenced to 18 years in prison.

9 people were killed following a gun battle between militants and the Nigerian military in Bori village in Rivers state yesterday February 23rd. Super Eagles coach, Sunday Oliseh, has reportedly agreed to pay Ex Super Eagles international Tijani Babangida his salary, after insisting that his former Ajax team-mate must remain in his backroom staff.
Tijani Babangida was sacked as Oliseh’s personal assistant by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) without any reason last week. The ex-international, who was supposed to be on N600,000 per month contract, had not been paid since July 2015.
Oliseh told NFF bosses that in his contract he is entitled to appoint two members of staff, independent of the NFF, so the football body don't have the power to sack his P.A unless they sack him or terminate his contract..

According to him, this will help bring International focus to the various tourist attractions we have in Nigeria and in the long run help improve our economy. Nigeria's elected leaders are legally entitled to paid holiday and typically they take these holidays in exotic foreign holiday destinations. But the world is changing. Nigeria is changing. And as Nigerians, we have to adjust our behaviors so that they make economic sense in today's world.
Instead of vacationing overseas, why can't our leaders vacation at scenic and beautiful Nigerian locations such as Yankari Games Reserve in Bauchi, Obudu Cattle Ranch in Cross River or Mambilla Plateau in Taraba or even the Gashaka Gumti Games Reserve, also in Taraba? I have holidayed in these places and they are as beautiful as any holiday location anywhere in the world. Our economy is facing challenges. We need to be looking at non oil resources and tourism is one area we can make a honest buck. But which tourist would come to Nigeria if our own elite refuse to holiday here? Consider the history of The US and The UK.
Their leaders habitually spend their vacations within their nations. It is a rarity for them to holiday overseas. US President Barrack Obama recently returned from his vacation to Hawaii while British Prime Minister had his last vacation in Cornwall in The UK. Our leaders, be they the President or any of the 36 state governors, are the chief marketing officers for the nation and their states.
Their presence in a local holiday resort or attraction draws the attention of the world. Since they have such capital, should they not spend it in Nigeria rather than abroad? And it is not just leaders who should so act. All of us should begin to patronize local tourist attractions. Tourism fetches South Africa over $5 billion annually and $1 billion in Kenya. In Nigeria, tourism is so insignificant because we do not make enough efforts to attract tourists.
Our Naira is nose diving and the only way to salvage the situation is to#BuyNaijaToGrowTheNaira.

The senatorial liaison office of the candidate of APC in the March 19th re-run election in Rivers South East Senatorial District, Senator Magnus Ngei Abe was attacked in Bori, Ogoni on Monday February 22.
A statement by Parry Saroh Benson, Spokesperson to Senator Magnus Ngei Abe said, armed men clad in army uniform suspected to be thugs of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers State is alleged to have been responsible for the dastardly act.
Eye witness account said that the criminals carrying sophisticated weapons threw dynamites and bombs into the senatorial office of Senator Magnus Abe in Bori while staff and visitors as at the time of incident scampered for safety.
Meanwhile some staff and visitors who escaped are yet to be accounted for.
Recalled that few days ago, Governor Nyesom Wike had at the 50th Birthday celebration of Senator Lee Maeba in Luuwa, Khana Local Government Area in Rivers State charged PDP supporters that he will not be happy unless they stop Senator Magnus Abe’s re-election bid by all means.
The event of today has clearly shown that the charge by the Governor to his supporters to stop Senator Abe has just begun by the attack on the senatorial liaison office.
"We view this attack as a cheap attempt to intimidate our supporters and so fear to participate in the forthcoming re-run election".
"I want to call on all our supporters and all law abiding citizens of the Rivers South-East Senatorial District especially the people of Ogoni not to take laws in their hands nor do anything that will lead to lost of lives and property but to remain resolute and ready to participate fully in the forthcoming re-run election in the area". Abe said.
He went further to say, "the struggle to liberate Ogoniland, Rivers State and particularly Rivers South East Senatorial District from the claws of political gangsters, criminals and thugs masquerading as political leaders cannot be won without sacrifice".
Abe added that the reign of impunity, violence and lawlessness has reached its zenith in Rivers State and “we cannot pretend that any kind of election could be held under this atmosphere unless something is done to bring to book the perpetrators of this heinous crime as March, 2016 may not be different from March, 2015".
The statement concludes by saying "we do not need to wait until the Omoku experience repeat itself in Bori where over 20 persons were killed in one day. Therefore, I called on President Muhammadu Buhari, the Police and other security agents in the State to act fast in order to forestall further attacks by criminal gangs on the people"
The drama between rapper Fetty wap and Love & Hip Hop Hollywood star Masika Tucker just got messier as Maskia just filed legal documents demanding the rapper submit to a paternity test. TMZ reports below
We're told Masika explains in the papers, she and Fetty met last year and from June 28 until July 15 had "sexual relations on numerous occasions." She also states he was her only partner during that period. Ditto for the 4 months prior.
Bottom line for Masika -- who's 7-8 months along -- Fetty's her only candidate for the daddy.
Masika also wants Fetty to pay pregnancy expenses and child support once the baby arrives. She lists some monthly expenses ... including $4,500 for rent, $820 for a housekeeper and $2,000 for clothes.

President Buhari will depart Nigeria for Saudi Arabia tomorrow February 22nd. A statement by the Special Assistant to President Buhari on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, states that President Buhari, who will be accompanied by a high-powered Federal Government delegation, including the Minister of State (Petroleum) and Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, (NNPC), Dr. Ibe Kachikwu, will first fly to Riyadyh for talks on Tuesday with King Salman Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and senior officials of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
Ongoing efforts by Nigeria and other members of the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) to achieve greater stability in the price of crude oil exports are expected to be high on the agenda of discussions between President Buhari and the Saudi Monarch.
Crude oil prices and market stability will also be on the front burner when President Buhari goes on to Doha on Saturday for talks on Sunday with the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. Buhari is also scheduled to meet with leading Saudi and Qatari businessmen in Riyadh and Doha, and invite them to support his administration’s efforts to revamp the Nigerian economy by taking advantage of the great investment opportunities currently available in Nigeria’s mining, agriculture, power supply, infrastructure, transportation, communications and other sectors.

The 34-year-old married father of four is furious that Nathalie Koah, 24, has decided to go public about their passionate seven year affair.
She has insisted that she simply want to use ‘Revenge Porn – Football, sex, money: the testimony of Samuel Eto’o’s ex’ to warn others off sleeping with celebrities.
Ms Koah said she felt ‘humiliated and betrayed’ when the footballer allegedly leaked nude pictures of her to the media.

The book, which was due to go on sale today, claims the affair took place between 2007 and 2014, when Eto’o was at the height of his career with Chelsea, Barcelona, Real Madrid and Inter Milan.
But lawyers for the former Cameroon international argued successfully that the book contravened France’s strict privacy laws.
Judges banned the book on Thursday, although lawyers for the publishers have now lodged an appeal.
Olivier Pardo, for the Paris-based ‘Editions du Moment’, told French news agency AFP: "I’m extremely shocked and flabbergasted by this ‘totally unjustified’ decision."
Mr Pardo added: "The book not only lays bare the life of Mr. Eto’o but also that of Nathalie Koah."
Ms Koah, who is from Cameroon, insists Eto’o published the intimate photos of her on the Internet as revenge when they broke up.
She said:
"I won’t let myself be knocked down. I’m a victim in this story. I’m not being allowed to tell the truth as it is."
In turn, Eto’o has accused her of ‘fraud and breach of trust’.
Eto'o, who is now playing for Turkish club Antalyaspor, married his childhood sweetheart Georgette in 2007, and the couple now have four children.

Disturbing footage has been released showing the father a murdered boy moments after he dug himself out of a shallow grave with his throat slashed.
Forrest “Butch” Bowyer was stabbed in the neck and his 12-year-old son Brett shot dead by robbers in Alabama in February 2002.
The victims were buried in shallow graves - but Bowyer somehow managed to claw his way out.
Bleeding heavily with his throat cut "from ear to ear", he crawled to Highway 431 in Seale, Russell County, for help.
Only now, 14 years after the gruesome crime, have Russell County Sheriff’s Department released the horrific dashboard camera footage from that night on February 18.
The officer on camera can be heard saying: "I got a man that’s been cut to hell and said his son’s been shot 3 times.
"[The son] is buried in a grave down here at Uchee, and he wants to go get him.
"He was buried and dug himself out, this is a bad one."
In the video, obtained by WVTM-TV News Leader 9 , the officer asks Bowyer who attacked them, to which he responds multiple times, "Jim Brooks".
Bowyer can be heard telling the patrol officer that the killers would likely be back at his home "trying to get some more money".
Brooks and accomplice Michael Carruth were later arrested found guilty at trial.
Both are now on death row, WVTM-TV reported.
Russell County sheriff Heath Taylor told the news channel: "It’s crazy to think about he [Bowyer] survived that night.
"Not one single time do I pass this area, where this occurred, that I don’t think about that case."

A 36-year old woman from Michigan has made a crashing entrance into the Guinness Book of World Records Wednesday at the Harper University Hospital, by giving birth to her 14th child, all born from different fathers.
According to the internationally recognized authority on the cataloguing and verification of world records, Anita Sullivan has just become the first woman in recorded history to conceive children with more than thirteen different men.
She said:
“I’m extremely proud to have broken a World Record,” Ms. Sullivan told reporters. “My mother always told me that I was lazy and worthless, and that I would never accomplish anything in my life. Now, I’ve shown everyone that she was wrong, and that I can even be the best in the world when I put my mind to something. In fact, I’ve just accomplished something that no one had done before!”
Anita Sullivan says she’s been unlucky with relationships in the past, but she believes that this time she may have found the man of her life.
“I’m good at having babies, but I’m really awful when it comes to picking the fathers of my children,” says the young woman. “This time, however, I think I’ve learned from my past mistakes. Ramón isn’t like all the jerks I’ve dated before. We’ve been together for almost a year and a half, and I really believe it could work between us.”
After their meeting with Ms. Sullivan, the representatives of Guinness opened a second investigation concerning the record for the number of child support pensions received by one person.
The Detroit native is already the beneficiary of pensions paid by 11 different men, and is implicated in two other custody cases, which should proceed before the family court over the next two months.
The investigation should be over by the month of March 2016, and Guinness will then be able to tell if Ms. Sullivan holds a second World Record or not.
